Get the latest news on Elon Musk's Starlink satellite broadband launch in India, licensing status, and competition from Airtel and Jio.
Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite broadband is poised to enter the Indian market, following successful roll‑outs in several countries worldwide. The company recently submitted a license request to the Ministry of Telecommunications (DoT), and the department is expected to discuss the application next month. Earlier attempts in 2021 to obtain a Global Mobile Personal Communication Services (GMPCS) license were unsuccessful, leading to refunds for customers who had placed free pre‑orders.
Starlink is awaiting regulatory approval from the DoT before it can accept new pre‑orders or commence commercial operations in India. An official statement on the Starlink website confirms that the company is in the “regulatory approval pending” phase.
India’s major telecom operators, Airtel and Jio, have also shown interest in satellite internet services. Jio has applied for a GMPCS license, while Airtel has sought a “One Lab” license, both essential for acquiring satellite spectrum from the telecom department once approvals are granted.
Satellite broadband can bridge connectivity gaps in remote and underserved regions, complementing existing fiber and mobile networks. With Starlink, Airtel, and Jio eyeing the market, Indian users may soon benefit from high‑speed internet access across the country.
Starlink’s prospective entry into India marks a significant step toward expanding high‑speed internet access via satellite. While regulatory approval is still pending, the concurrent interest from Airtel and Jio suggests a competitive landscape that could accelerate the rollout of satellite broadband across the nation. Stay tuned for official updates on licensing and service launch timelines.
