Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) is a Government of India scheme launched in May 2016 to provide clean cooking fuel to women from poor households. Under the scheme, eligible women can obtain a deposit-free LPG connection through participating Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs).
The current PMUY scheme provides a deposit-free connection and, as per the official PMUY portal, includes the first LPG refill and stove free of cost. The scheme is intended to reduce dependence on traditional cooking fuels and improve access to clean cooking energy.
The PMUY programme continues to expand its coverage. The Government has approved an additional 25 lakh LPG connections, taking the overall PMUY target to 10.6 crore connections. According to the official PMUY portal, more than 10.56 crore connections had been released by September 2026.
| Scheme Name | Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) |
| Launched | May 2016 |
| Target | 10.6 crore LPG connections |
| Beneficiary | Adult women from eligible poor households |
| Connection Type | Deposit-free LPG connection |

According to the current official PMUY eligibility conditions, the applicant must meet the following requirements:
PMUY eligibility is not based on a universal ₹2 lakh annual income limit. The official scheme uses the prescribed poor-household/deprivation criteria and other eligibility conditions.
The official PMUY portal lists several beneficiary categories, including eligible women from:
Meeting one category alone does not guarantee a connection. The applicant must satisfy all applicable PMUY conditions.
The current PMUY portal states that the connection is provided without security deposit and installation charges. The benefits associated with the PMUY connection include:
These benefits are provided according to the applicable PMUY provisions through the Oil Marketing Companies.
The Government had approved a targeted subsidy of ₹300 per 14.2 kg LPG cylinder for up to 9 refills per year for PMUY beneficiaries during FY 2025-26, with proportionate support for 5 kg cylinders.
Because that approval specifically covered FY 2025-26, beneficiaries should check the latest Government of India announcement for the applicable subsidy in FY 2026-27. The ₹300 subsidy should not automatically be assumed to continue for every refill in the current financial year.
The current official PMUY portal lists the following documents and information for a new connection:
Migrant applicants may use the prescribed self-declaration format where applicable.
Yes. The official PMUY portal states that applicants may apply by submitting the application to an LPG distributor of their choice. Applicants can visit the nearest participating LPG distributor and submit the required KYC and supporting documents.
No. PMUY is not a universal free-LPG programme for every household. The connection is intended for eligible adult women from poor households who meet the scheme conditions. In addition, the household must not already have an LPG connection registered with an Oil Marketing Company.
Under PMUY, the connection is provided on a deposit-free basis and the current PMUY portal states that the first refill and stove are also provided free of cost. This does not mean that every future LPG refill will always be free.
Future refill prices and any applicable subsidy are subject to the Government's current policy and the prevailing LPG price.
The method for tracking an application can depend on the LPG company and the current online system. Applicants should use the official PMUY portal or contact the LPG distributor selected during the application process.
If an application is rejected or delayed, first ask the LPG distributor for the reason. Check whether the family already has an LPG connection, whether the documents are correct and whether the applicant meets the current poor-household and other PMUY requirements.
For further assistance, use the official PMUY grievance or helpline facilities.
Helpline numbers can change over time, so verify the latest contact information on the official PMUY website.
